The more traditional installing method is fixing the flooring planks
to battens. These battens can be fixed to the concrete or in some
cases they are merely braced to the walls and there is no solid sub-structure.
Installing on battens is ideal when there is no suitable screed or where
very wide planks are used. Battens has the additional benefit that the
overall floor level can be adjusted. It also provides the traditional
hollow sound associated with plank floors (although this can be limited
by using acoustic dampeners between the battens).
Battens are usually spaced 350mm – 400mm apart and the planks are
secret nailed through the tongues. It is important that high quality
nails are used that won’t pull out when the timber moves.
